Our mission is celebrate diversity and speak out on injustice before it’s too late.

OUR STORY

The creation of Unfiltered was initially motivated by the prevalence of performative activism in race and equity issues that seemed to overlook the importance of finding actual solutions. However, performative activism isn’t the only thing that stands in the way of achieving equity and understanding in society.

In the United States, there has been a growing belief that emphasizing diversity is divisive. Especially with the recent federal ban of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) services, this idea that diversity is undeserving of recognition has resulted in a loss of funding towards (and control over) what is taught, displayed, and talked about in institutions across the nation.

WHAT WE DO

In order to continue prioritizing diversity in our nation, Unfiltered documents the present and reflects on the past.

Articles: Written pieces on topics such as spotlighting diverse communities, analyzing media, investigating historical events, and more. Articles can dive deep, or just scrape the surface in preparation for a deeper discussion.

Research: From archives to artifacts, research initiatives utilize artistic mediums to communicate knowledge. These works are heavily informational while also being specifically designed to avoid jargon.

Media: Visual mediums that document can often communicate stories vividly in ways that words itself don’t always succeed in. Documentaries and meaningful cinematography help communicate emotion and feelings related to social topics.

Submissions: Readers can submit a variety of works to contribute to the Unfiltered journal, such as original poems and art pieces. Unfiltered’s goal of documenting diverse issues and communities thrives on the input of our audience.

Where does journalism come in?

Well, journalism– being defined as the practice of collecting and producing news– ensures the practice of a free press that adequately informs our nation on all issues, regardless of governmental efforts to selectively silence certain issues and ideas.

What does history have to do with journalism?

You would be right in noting that history and journalism differ in that journalism is timely, and history is old. However, the two have always gone hand-in-hand: journalism creates the primary sources of history, and history provides information on societal events that can inform journalistic productions.

At Unfiltered, history and journalism collaborate to better inform the public on societal issues being silenced.

Diversity just talks about race, right?

Simply put, diversity is everything that makes us different from each other. Diversity is not only the inclusion of people of different races and genders, but also people of different hobbies, interests, backgrounds, and more.

We want to hear from you.
